My Aunt went camping with us last weekend and had a hard time with getting into (and out of) our 23RS using the fold-out stairs. She has had multiple hip replacement surgeries and knee surgeries and walks with a cane. It was scary for us to watch and help her in and out of the camper. Our 23RS has two step and we were able to use the concrete pad at Pecan Park as a first step but nevertheless - it was a situation that gave us heartburn watching her struggle. We really want her to have a much easier time accessing the RV. Since we are considering upgrading (4 adults and 2 kids in a 23RS gets a little punchy after a few days), this would be even more of a problem with RV's that have 3 steps up into the interiors.

One thing we thought of was to build a folding ramp. Does anyone know of an assisted access method/device that helps folks who have had knee problems or similar get into their campers?

Thanks!!!

If you're thinking of buying a bigger trailer, perhaps a toy hauler would help. They have the ramp that could make it easier for our Aunt to get in/out of the trailer. If things get worse in the future and she needs a wheelchair, this would be an easy way to assist her in/out of the trailer.

While its not intended for people we have a 5' dogramp for the pups to make access easier for the DW to take the boys to the vets office. This one will take up to 300lbs. http://www.dogramp.com/tele84.php . James

Toy Hauler isn't a bad idea, but many raps are way to steep.

I saw a guy with a wood ramp pulled out of the back of his truck, when setup it followed the side of the trailer up to the stairs. The ramp was one part as best I could see, then a another piece it attached to sat over the stairs and had 2 legs in the front to stabilize. No railing but looked solid and usable. Wish I had taken pics now.

My legs have very little strength anymore, which makes climbing those stairs very difficult. We added this folding handle and it makes all the difference in the world!!! Multiple places to grab with both hand is great! We also added one of those handles they sell on TV that has big suction cups on both ends and a big, thick handle in the middle (added one to the shower, too.). btw, the toyhauler ramp is GREAT for walking up (and the trailer sides are close enough to be able to grab them for support) but the angle is way too steep for routine access via my scooter up.

I would definitely put the handle on. But here is something that may help

Portable folding wheelchair ramp

Looks like it would be very easy to store and maneuver

Good idea - as long as the destination is large enough to actually get the wheelchair or scooter IN ... or it's being used to improve walking access.

You would have to chose your camping spot carefully. Just figuring on my 5th wheeler, it looks like an 8' ramp would be most usable and $300 isn't a bad price, I've seen ramps to load 4 wheelers that cost more. Good luck and I'm sure your aunt enjoyed herself even with the problems of getting into and out of the camper. BTW the 5er has the folding handle on it and my wife uses it all the time. It's really a big help.

I just saw an electric lift step somewhere for older Rv'ers that may have trouble getting in and out of their trailers.
I'll look around to see if I can find it. It would be exactly what you are looking for but pricey. I think $1000 +.
Here is a link I just found on the web. http://www.americanwheelchairs.com/speclifthandylift.shtml
It is not the one I saw before. I hope it helps.

Linda

Just located the price for this, $1179.00 includes all hardware.
